Rural Road Trip

Last week reporter Michael Mishak and I took a three-day trip through rural Nevada with gubernatorial candidate Rory Reid. It was fun and challenging, and I saw more of Nevada than I ever have before. We drove from Reno all the way to Wells on I-80, then down to Ely on U.S. 93 and back west on highway 50, a.k.a. "The Loneliest Road in America." Here are some outtakes from the rural road trip.

The Owl Cafe. Eureka, Nevada.

Food that I couldn't eat. Lovelock, Nevada.

Another Owl Cafe. Battle Mountain, Nevada.

Sturgeon's Restaurant. Lovelock, Nevada.

The Red Lion Casino and Hotel. Elko, Nevada.

Owl Cafe. Eureka, Nevada.

Earthquake damage from 2008. Wells, Nevada.

  2. That's true. We covered a lot of ground in three days and drove about 1,000 miles! It was cool to see that much of the northern part of the state.

  3. Lovelock as a rural community has its ups and downs. Right now Sturgeon's, the primary casino in town, has some things I would not eat but there are several other restaurants in the community that do have good food. It's too bad that they can't have fresh veggies but they are at end of the supply line from Reno. For years the locals have wanted fresher produce but the freshness depends on their suppliers. Many local grow their own in the summer since Basic Vegetable, a local veggie farm, went out of business. As far as the waitress, Angie Shaden goes, this layd has been a waitress for many years. She could only serve what the kitchen prepares. By the way she has been a senior citizen for at least 15 years.

  4. Hey Carol,

Let me clarify my post about the veggies...

I couldn't eat the plate of vegetables because they were served at a Rory Reid event, and it would be unethical for the working press covering the event to eat the food. I actually really wanted to eat those veggies, but couldn't b/c of media ethics! It was nothing against Angie at all! She actually served me a delicious turkey sandwich after the event was over!
